At-home treatments for sinus infection symptoms
When you have a sinus infection, the pain, pressure and congestion can be intense. And we know that all you want is relief. But unfortunately, there is no quick fix. That’s because most sinus infections are caused by respiratory viruses, which means antibiotics won’t help. It’s also why the best treatment is to focus on managing symptoms while your immune system goes to work.
Sinus infection symptom relief
Reducing inflammation and swelling within your sinus cavities while working to thin and drain mucus, are key to feeling better, faster. Follow these 3 steps to reduce sinus pain and inflammation and promote drainage.
Steps to soothe sinus pain & pressure
Follow these 3 steps for the next 3 days
- Take 800 mg of ibuprofen (like Advil®) every 8 hours – This high dose is safe for adults and reduces inflammation and pain.
- Take an over-the-counter medication with guaifenesin as the only ingredient (like Mucinex®) – Guaifenesin is an expectorant and works to thin mucus and promote drainage.
- Drink at least 8 oz. of water, 8 times per day – Water helps guaifenesin work better to drain sinuses.
When to seek online care: When sinus pain, pressure and congestion don’t improve after 10 days, it can be a sign that you have a bacterial infection and need prescription medication.
